Franschhoek Valley is, like many other important wine districts in the Western Cape, located in the famous Coastal Region.
It is a picturesque valley that is largely surrounded by the mountains of Great Drakenstein, Franschhoek and Wemmershoek, which reach serious heights (up to more than 1700 meters). Only towards the northwest, the valley of the Mountain River opens towards Paarl.
These special topographical conditions contribute to the fact that a large diversity of grape varieties has been planted here, from sauvignon blanc and chardonnay (also for Méthode Cap Classique) to malbec and mourvèdre. Franschhoek got his name because many French Huguenots settled here.
The many French names, also from wine producers, keep that memory alive. Franschhoek is also known as the gastronomic center of the Western Cape, with several top restaurants.
