Swartland

Swartland

The Swartland district is located in the warmer north of the famous Coastal Region, the wide coastal strip to the north and also to the south of Cape Town.

Jan van Riebeek called this large area ‘the black land’, which got its name from the renoster forest, a native plant that colors the landscape black after rain (especially in winter). This rugged, still somewhat remote area is now one of the most dynamic of South African viticulture with terroir-driven white wines based on chenin blanc and syrah red, all kinds of Mediterranean grapes, as well as red Rhôneblends. These are the wines of the so-called Swartland Independents, mostly young winemakers who found old, non-irrigated vineyards.
